A gigantic lock system in Kiel-Holtenau allows the exit from one of the world's busiest artificial waterways, the Kiel Canal, into the Kiel Fjord. The state capital of Kiel and several beautiful beaches stretch out on both sides of the Baltic Sea bay, which stretches far into the country, and the jumble of large pots, fishing boats, yachts, sailors and optimists. The large ferries and cruise ships moor at the Ostseekai directly in the city centre. Along the "Kiellinie", strollers have the best view of the harbour activity on the eastern shore with the HDW shipyards and the large gantry cranes, which have long since become a landmark of the city of shipbuilding and the navy. Just like Kiel Week, one of the biggest international sailing events and a maritime highlight of the year.

At the narrowest point of the Öresund, directly opposite Helsingborg in Sweden, lies Helsingør on the island of Zealand. Royal Copenhagen is not far away, but Helsingør has its very own royal story to tell. William Shakespeare set his famous drama Hamlet at the Renaissance Kronborg Castle, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 with its mighty fortifications. A long promenade connects the castle, Helsingør's city centre and the modern cultural harbour - an old shipyard site that has been transformed into a lively centre with theatre stages, museums and cafés.

What will it be? Half-timbered houses or modern art, gourmet temples or street food, "hygge" small-town flair or urban cosmopolitanism? Aarhus has it all. In Denmark's second largest city, there is always something new to discover between the modernised harbour (an eye-catcher: the DOKK1 library) and the city centre with the Arne Jacobsen Town Hall and the cathedral. While art lovers can explore the Museum AroS with Olafur Eliasson's rainbow panorama, history buffs are drawn to the open-air museum. Everyone else simply follows one of the 45,000 students to the old, hip Latiner neighbourhood and treat themselves to a relaxing coffee.

The flat headland in the far north of Denmark, where the Kattegat and Skagerrak clearly merge, once gave the town its name, the Old Norse word skaga meaning "to protrude". Surrounded by long sandy beaches and two large shifting sand dunes, the beautiful harbour town with its photogenic warehouses on the harbour is not all about fish. Artists and dropouts, attracted by the picturesque landscape and the special light, settled in an artists' colony at the end of the 19th century and made the fishing village famous in one fell swoop. The works of the Skagen painters are now on display in the Skagen Museum.

The Oslofjord, with its idyllic islands and summery beaches, forms a picturesque entrance to the Norwegian capital over a length of around 120 kilometres. At the top of Mount Holmenkollen is the gigantic ski jump with the best view of the city. Down on the banks of the fjord, modelled on a glacier, is the futuristic Oslo Opera House. The inner-city harbour with the monumental City Hall, annual venue for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, is flanked by the mighty medieval fortress Akershus and the post-modern architecture of the new Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen districts, the new promenade along the fjord. The districts of the trendy metropolis are changing, with plans to redesign the harbour front, create a new boulevard and build a new Munch Museum.

Some towns have such euphonious names that you immediately fall in love with them without ever having been there. Lillesand is one of them - and the idyllic, well-kept small town lives up to the promise of its name. The picturesque seafaring town was once a harbour town with nine sailing shipyards. The gleaming white wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, built by wealthy businessmen, still bear witness to Lillesand's great maritime past. In the summer months, the streets and alleyways around the cosy harbour pulsate with life: There is an almost Mediterranean flair here and people meet to stroll, chat and "look at the water".
Fitness, cosmetics, massage or enjoy the sun and sea with a good book in a deckchair. This day at sea invites you to enjoy your own personal pampering programme.

Hamburg has seen many ships. Richly laden cogs of the Hanseatic League, famous windjammers of the 19th century and sea giants have moored in its harbour. When entering or leaving Hamburg harbour, the beautiful banks of the Elbe stand prominently in the trellis: gliding towards the mouth of the Elbe, you pass the patrician villas of the Elbchaussee, the staircase district of Blankenese, the Airbus site and all the picturesque banks of the Elbe with their green dykes and white beaches, with small Elbe ports on the nearby banks of the river showing off their charming harbour views time and again.
