Hacienda San José Cholul - Chichén Itzá - Valladolid - Riviera Maya
Enjoy your breakfast in the atmospheric hacienda.
Travel by private car with driver and your guide to the largest and most visited Mayan site in Mexico, Chichen Itza. Visit to the archaeological zone. The Mayan culture, further developed by the influence of the Toltecs from central Mexico, is expressed in all its splendour at Chichén-Itzá.
Of the many buildings that were buried and overgrown by the jungle, almost 30 have been uncovered and restored to date. The earliest date from the heyday of the classical period around 600 AD, but most were built or extended by the Toltecs.
El Castillo is the most impressive building with a height of 30 metres. We continue to the largest ball playground in the Yucatán. We then walk in the shade of the trees to the "sacrificial fountain". El Caracol is reminiscent of a snail shell and was discovered and drawn by the explorer Frederick Catherwood back in 1842. The observatory was used by the Maya to observe Venus and its orbit, among other things.
Continue to Valladolid. The Ex-Convento de San Bernardino de Siena in Valladolid is one of the oldest buildings of the colonial era and one of the first churches on American soil. Construction of the Franciscan monastery, which is located directly above the vaulted ceiling of one of the largest cenotes in the Yucatán, began in 1552. The architect Fray Juan de Mérida probably wanted to ensure a self-sufficient water supply, as evidenced by the extremely productive fruit and vegetable garden within the solid walls. In addition to the small museum with artefacts from local church history, you can also view the original oil paintings in the church building.
Discover the Mercado Municipal. Immerse yourself in the colourful hustle and bustle of the market and be inspired by the unique atmosphere. The market is divided into two large halls: While the west side offers everyday items such as brooms, pots, clothes and many traditional Mexican handicrafts, the east side explodes with all the colours of the rainbow. Cheerful Mayan women loudly advertise their wares from the Valladolid region - mostly vegetables, flowers, spices and subtropical fruits. Enjoy the aroma of the different flavours and experience the unique, multicultural charm of the market.
From Valladolid, the journey continues by private car to your chosen hotel on the Caribbean coast, on the Riviera Maya.
