Enjoy your breakfast. Afterwards, you will go on a guided walk through the beautiful UNESCO-protected old town. Here you can experience the history of the city at first hand. Immerse yourself in the colourful daily routine when you visit the market hall. Fruit, vegetables and typical dishes are on offer here. All the important sights, such as La Compañia church, Plaza San Francisco, Convento San Francisco and Iglesia San Agustín, are on the programme. The churches and museums in the historic centre are home to a collection of the most important art treasures in South America.
500 years of architectural history unfold before your eyes here in Quito. Snow-white façades and cornflower-blue windows compete with churches and convents. For the perfect overview of Quito and its volcanoes, head up the Panecillo hill to the "Iron Maiden", one of the city's landmarks. A visit to the Equator Monument with its museum of pre-Columbian art is also on the programme. Choose your own favourite programme and we will arrange the day according to your wishes. We recommend these sights:
La Compañia church:
It is the crown jewel of Quito's historic centre and one of the most important manifestations of Baroque architecture in the world. The magnificent church was built over a period of 160 years from 1605 onwards, so that other architectural styles can be found in it. The church and the Jesuit monastery of the same name are among the most beautiful colonial church buildings in the world, with around 7 tonnes of gold used in the interior!
Basilica of San Francisco:
The Basilica of San Francisco was considered one of the greatest architectural buildings in a historical centre in America and was nicknamed "El Escorial" of the New World. The building serves as a repository for more than 3,500 colonial artworks, the most notable of which are those of the famous Quiteño School of Art. This is also where the legend of Cantuña originated, which tells the story of a cunning indigenous labourer who managed to deceive the devil.
Casa Museo Guayasamin:
The Museo Guayasamin is an artistic-architectural complex designed by Oswaldo Guayasamin, probably the most important and influential artist in Ecuador. The imposing Chapel of Man, which dominates the complex, is the master's homage to the Latin American people throughout the ages. His archaeological and artistic collections from Ecuador and neighbouring countries, as well as the permanent exhibition of Guayasamin, include around 1,000 of his most famous series such as La Lucha del Indio, La Edad del Llanto, La Edad de la Ira and La Edad de la Ternura.
Casa del Alabado:
The Casa del Alabado is a delightful boutique museum located on the edge of the famous Plaza San Francisco. It offers an excellent view of some of the pre-Columbian artworks and the social developments of pre-Hispanic Ecuador. The artworks are located in one of the oldest houses in the historic centre, which has been perfectly renovated.
Plaza de la Independencia:
Located in the historic centre, the Plaza de la Independencia, or Independence Square, was the starting point for the planning and development of the city. The square is flanked by the city's most important buildings: Presidential Palace (Carondelet), Archbishop's Palace, Cathedral and City Palace.
Lunch is served in the Café Plaza Grande. If you like, you can visit craftsmen, artists or small manufacturers. You can also visit the central hill of El Panecillo, from where you have a fantastic view of the capital's sea of houses.
In the evening we have reserved a table for you in the trendy restaurant "Mea Culpa".
