Gorongosa National Park is Mozambique's premier wildlife destination and possibly one of the biggest and most significant wildlife restoration stories in Africa. The management of the park is focused on balancing the needs of conservation and the well-being of the stunning landscapes and their wildlife, as well as the families who live on the park's borders. The park is famous for the incredible variety of landscapes that visitors can experience. From magical forests, the lush rainforest and the waterfalls of Mount Gorongosa to the rivers and floodplains around Lake Urema. Gorongosa National Park is often referred to as the "Serengeti of the South" and is home to a rich biodiversity that harbours an extensive list of animal and plant species.
With the first light of day, you drive out into the bush and experience the unforgettable morning atmosphere in the park. A wake-up concert of birdsong accompanies you and the first rays of sunshine are a photographer's dream. On the alluvial plains, large waterbucks stand in the fading mist and huge groups of baboons leave the safety of the trees to forage in the savannah. Your guide will try to find the elephants that have cut their way through the woodland at night and, with a bit of luck, you will come across lions returning from the night's hunt and looking for a suitable resting place. After the safari, enjoy breakfast and relax at the lodge before setting off on another exciting safari in the afternoon.
On clear days, you can already see the silhouette of the Gorongosa Mountains from the plain of the national park. Mount Gogogo (1863 m) and the other peaks of the isolated granite massif are vital for the people, animals and plants of the Gorongosa region. Like a kind of water catcher, the mountains hold back the clouds of the Indian Ocean and give rise to rivers such as the Vunduzi.
