At Victoria Falls, the earth opens up and swallows one of Africa's largest rivers, the mighty Zambezi, forming the widest continuous waterfall in the world. When the water hits the narrow Batoka Gorge below, it forms a cloud of vapour that rises into the sky and gives the waterfall its local name 'Mosi-oa-tunya' (the thundering smoke). When the Zambezi is in flood, the haze forms a permanent rain cloud over the waterfall, giving visitors a shower even on the sunniest of days and is visible for miles.
Above the falls, tour boats cruise the tranquil Zambezi at sunset as the fading sunlight refracts in the distant spray of the waterfall. Through the rocky walls of the Batoka Gorge, the Zambezi below the falls offers a chain of world-class rapids, a prime opportunity for whitewater rafting.
Apart from being a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls also form a natural border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The waterfalls can be visited from both countries and most of the same activities are offered with helicopter tours, village visits and souvenir shopping.
Whether you prefer to relax by drinking tea in colonial surroundings or by taking an exciting bungee jump from a bridge is entirely up to you. In Victoria Falls, neither the adrenalin junkie nor the visitor with weaker nerves will get bored, even after several days.
On the Zambian side, you are offered a side view of the falls and a view into the Batoka Gorge. On Livingstone Island, however, you can also venture to the very edge of the falls at a dizzying height.
In Zimbabwe, many viewpoints and a hiking trail offer you a frontal view of three quarters of the 1.7 kilometre wide curtain of water as you stroll through a natural hot and wet rainforest created by the spray of the Falls.

Chobe River Front
After breakfast, your driver will take you to Chobe Chilwero Lodge, a good 74 kilometres away.
The Chobe Riverfront is an elephant mecca. Nowhere else in the world is there a greater concentration of elephants per square kilometre than here. Just take a look in the African winter and you will quickly run out of fingers and toes to count all the pachyderms that come to the river to drink and play.
Thanks to its proximity to Victoria Falls, the Chobe Riverfront is the part of Botswana with the highest visitor numbers (although still much quieter than most areas of South and East Africa). But what Chobe lacks in solitude, it more than makes up for in both quality and quantity of wildlife.
Nowhere else do you feel so incredibly tiny as in the Chobe when an impressive bull elephant strolls leisurely past the car or swims across the river in the immediate vicinity of the boat. Nowhere else do you feel as insignificant as in the Chobe compared to the hundreds of hippos and cape buffalo that populate the floodplains. When prides of lions stalk antelopes on the banks, your heart will beat up to your neck. All the exciting moments of your safari day will fade away as the red sun sinks into the river, accompanied by the calls of the African Fish Eagle.
Chobe is not only a wonderful starting point for a Botswana safari, the area also offers safari connoisseurs some animals that are rarely seen. The sable antelope, some jewels on the wish list of many bird lovers and also a few quiet, remote corners that invite you to explore.
Which accommodation you choose in or near the Chobe is crucial for your safari.
The cheapest options can be found in the larger hotels in town, although you will be accompanied by a few other cars on your game drives. The more exclusive accommodation is located in a wilder area within the national park or on the western side. There you can listen to the sounds of the bush at night and have a head start in terms of activities in the park.

Okavango Delta
A charter flight takes you to the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango Delta is the epicentre of Botswana's wilderness. A huge oasis in the middle of the Kalahari, it is full of life with all its elephants, birds and other wildlife. The true magic of the delta is revealed by the masses of water that come from the distant highlands of Angola and pour into the delta's channels and floodplains.
In winter, when the sun leaves the Kalahari dry and thirsty, the flood from Angola reaches the Okavango Delta and transforms the flood plains into a Noah's Ark of African wildlife.
Every year, when the floodwater brings life to the delta, it is reshaped by its inhabitants. Piece by piece, termites build their huge mounds on the islands, which are densely overgrown with palm trees. Hippos open up new waterways as they move through the reeds with their large bodies, creating a channel that can be explored with mokoros (traditional dugout canoes).
The Okavango Delta has many faces, which constantly change over the course of a year due to the unpredictable weather. As the water level rises and falls, the islands expand and shrink and the animals move to areas where life is easiest and the grass is greenest. Within a few days, a navigable sand road can turn into a waterway of unknown depth, forcing a safari to switch to boats.
When and where you stay in the Okavango Delta has a big impact on your activities in the bush, the game viewing opportunities and your overall safari experience.
The heart of the Delta, with its shallow channels and floodplains, is best explored by mokoro and on foot on the islands. If you are more interested in animals than water, you should visit a camp on the drier edge of the delta (including Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai Community Area). Hop into an open safari vehicle there and discover the many animals hiding in the forests.

Moremi Game Reserve
You drive back to Stanley's Airstrip and from there on to the Moremi Game Reserve.
The Moremi Game Reserve is all about the big animals and their habitats are as multifaceted and diverse as the animals themselves. Antelopes, perfectly adapted to life by the water, graze alongside vigilant buffalo on river meadows, framed by mighty trees towering into the sky, with leopard tails and paws dangling from their branches. Tree skeletons cast their shadows on the backs of the elephants that roam the savannahs, all just a stone's throw away from papyrus-lined canals that extend into the delta.
Moremi is like the land of unlimited possibilities when it comes to safaris, and really anything can happen.... The images of African wild dogs hunting antelope and of sunsets over a lagoon inhabited by hippos will stay with you long after your holiday is over.
Marvel at the balmy air in the tall reeds or under large trees, the pungent odours that suddenly assail you and reveal so much about the events of the previous night as you follow the call of a lion. Take a short break for a coffee at the edge of a lagoon and watch the hyenas, who also pop in for a refreshment, while you are already working out your next plan.
As a change to the game drives, you can explore the meanders of the water channels by boat, accompanied by squacco herons sailing in front of the boat with outstretched wings. Enjoy a sunset, gently rocking in a lagoon and look forward to the next morning game drive and what it will bring.
As the Moremi Game Reserve has national park rules, activities are only permitted during daylight hours and leaving the roads and main channels of the river is prohibited.
While the majority of the reserve is open to the public, there are also two lodges in the private Mombo Concession in the north of Chief's Island, in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Boat trips are not possible here, but the camps offer unbeatable game viewing opportunities on land. Often referred to as Botswana's predator paradise, this exclusive corner is reserved for wealthy clients and is often fully booked well in advance.

Sussi & Chuma Lodge is an enchanting retreat on the edge of the Zambezi River, just 10 minutes upstream from Victoria Falls on the edge of Zambia's Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park. This exclusive accommodation, which is named after the loyal friends of the great explorer David Livingstone, consists of the Sussi Tree Houses and the Chuma Houses, which are situated directly on the banks of the river.
Room
The complex comprises 12 luxurious Tree Houses nestled in the treetops of the ebony trees. Each of these accommodations has its own veranda with a marvellous view of the gigantic Zambezi River as well as air conditioning, a mini-bar, mosquito nets, ceiling fans, tea and coffee facilities and a hairdryer. The main area of the lodge can be reached via the elevated wooden walkways, which allow elephants and hippos to visit the lodge up close and yet safely. Here you will find a great terrace with a bar and lounge, an open-air dining area, a souvenir shop and a pool. The daily menu offers a wide selection of delicious dishes, which are served outdoors and can also be enjoyed in the evening around the blazing campfire.
Activities
During the day, guests have the opportunity to go on game drives in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, where Zambia's only white rhino can be found. There are also scenic early morning or sunset boat cruises on a 12-seater boat and fishing trips on the Zambezi River. A visit to the museum and Simonga village in Livingstone, as well as a guided tour to the Victoria Falls on the Zambian side is a must for every visitor. For those looking for an adrenaline rush, white water rafting, bungee jumping, canoeing, helicopter and microlight flights, safaris on horseback or elephants are just the thing.
Chobe Chilwero is situated on the border of the famous Chobe National Park. Chilwero means "place with a good view" in Setswana, which is very apt for the lodge, as it offers unrivalled panoramic views over the islands and floodplains of the Chobe River all the way to Namibia.
Room
The lodge consists of nine double and six twin-bedded chalets with thatched roofs, which have been individually designed to blend in perfectly with the surrounding topography and flora. For families, the lodge offers two chalets relatively close together. Each of the luxuriously furnished chalets has an en-suite bathroom with free-standing bath, rain shower, sala or balcony, mosquito nets, ceiling fan and air conditioning. The main building consists of an elegant lounge and dining room connected by spectacular patios with magnificent views.
Activities
When it comes to game viewing, Chobe Chilwero offers its guests maximum flexibility. Game drives are led by professional and qualified guides in customised vehicles and specially equipped boats. Fishing trips on the Chobe River, where perch and tiger fish can be caught, are organised at any time. A special highlight is the sunset boat trip with breathtaking views of the river.
The exclusive lodge was named after Thomas Baines, an explorer and artist who explored Botswana in the 19th century. Baines Camp is situated on the Boro River in a private concession area of the Okavango Delta, not far from the Moremi Game Reserve.
Room
The small and intimate Baines Camp has only five luxurious suites on raised platforms. The terraces offer a marvellous view over the Boro River and a lagoon that carries water all year round. The suites have a spacious bedroom with furnishings reminiscent of the romance of a bygone era. The four-poster beds are movable so that you can also sleep under the stars outside and admire the night sky over Botswana. The main area of the lodge includes a large deck, which is used for al fresco dining and also overlooks the river and lagoon. Of course, there is also a swimming pool, which is especially appreciated by the lodge's guests during the hot summer months.
Activities
The area around Baines Camp is ideal for wildlife and bird watching. Guests can enjoy various land and water activities here. Sometimes these even last into the dark so that nocturnal animals can also be seen. The magic of the water landscape is revealed in the tranquillity of a trip in a mokoro, the traditional dugout canoe propelled by a poler with a long pole, or on a faster trip in a motorboat. These trips usually take place all year round if the water level permits. In addition, safaris on foot are also offered, accompanied by an experienced and armed guide who will bring you closer to the wonders of nature.
Chief's Camp is located in the exclusive Mombo Concession in the Moremi Game Reserve and is situated on the north-western tip of Chief's Island. The area is renowned for first-class safaris and is often referred to as the "predator centre" of Africa.
The main building houses a lounge with a small selection of literature about the country's flora and fauna, an elegant bar, a souvenir shop, a dining room serving first-class food with an African flavour, a pizza terrace and a swimming pool with a large viewing deck. In addition, Chief's Camp has a luxurious spa with a wide range of treatments that can be booked on site at your own expense, as well as a small gym and entertainment room for children.
Room
The accommodation consists of ten 141 m2 luxury pavilions with en-suite bathrooms, their own balcony and a small private pool. Large window fronts, sliding doors to the balcony as well as outdoor showers and luxurious bathtubs complete the exceptional pavilions. Guests can also enjoy air conditioning and an espresso machine in every suite.
There is also the Geoffrey Kent Suite, two interconnected pavilions that can accommodate a maximum of 6 guests.
The Geoffrey Kent Suite consists of two connected pavilions. The Mini Suite offers space for 2 guests, while the Luxury Suite can accommodate 4-6 guests.
The Kent Suite offers a private kitchenette and lounge with its own room service and waiter as well as a separate boma with a fireplace.
Game drives take place on a private basis.
Activities
Game viewing in the Mombo area on Chief's Island is spectacular all year round. Apart from the big cats, this area is also known for its high concentration of numerous other animal species: Zebras, giraffes, warthogs, antelopes, elephants, buffaloes and many more. Game drives are conducted in open safari vehicles. Excursions by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) are offered depending on the water level and season.
The passport must be valid for at least six months upon entry and should have at least four free pages. For children, the original or a notarised copy of the birth certificate must be carried. An entry permit for tourist purposes is issued free of charge at the border stations upon entry. A visa is only required when entering the country with a temporary passport.

The savannah and semi-desert climate of Botswana causes temperatures to fluctuate throughout the year, but also during the course of the day. The winter months from May to September are considered the dry season. The thermometer rises to an average of 20 to 25 degrees, with temperatures dropping sharply in some regions, especially at night in winter. The delta becomes a flood plain during these months and reaches its maximum extent in July and August. Temperatures gradually rise again from September. From November, the summer rainy season slowly begins. Temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius. Around 250 to 500 millimetres of precipitation fall each year, most of it from December to March.
There are no vaccination requirements for travellers coming directly from Germany. However, the Federal Foreign Office recommends checking and completing the standard vaccinations according to the current vaccination calendar of the Robert Koch Institute for children and adults when travelling.
