Environment & Sustainability
Nature conservation is particularly important to the operators of Alphonse Island Lodge. From the very beginning, the resort was intended to become a part of the island that is closely connected to the natural environment. That is why the entire staff is strongly committed to protecting the unique flora and fauna of the region. The turtle population in particular, but also the bird life and the island's beaches and forests are the focus of the extensive endeavours. The entire team appreciates your interest and cooperation.
Protecting the Outer Islands - snorkelling, diving and expeditions with a marine biologist
The coral islands, the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, are more unspoilt than any other island in the Seychelles archipelago. Nature is intact and much is being done to protect it. Preserving the stunning natural beauty of the remote Outer Islands is at the heart of what Blue Safari is all about and what we are happy to support. As stewards of this area, Blue Safari works with various partners and stakeholders to continually pioneer conservation in this region. There are various ongoing and long-term projects. Each of these projects aims to provide lasting solutions. The basis is the close co-operation with the Island Conservation Society, ICS.
The Outer Islands are ideal for nature lovers. On Alphonse Island there is an ICS research station and a Discovery Centre where you can learn interesting facts about the protection of the islands, exchange ideas, gain exciting insights and book excursions such as fly fishing, snorkelling and diving tours, boat trips and excursions to the other uninhabited islands in the Alphonse group. Some of these expeditions are organised with a marine biologist. ICS also takes care of nature conservation on other islands, such as Desroches Island, where staff are also on site. The conservation projects currently include
- Protection and intensive monitoring of marine mammals, sea turtles and Aldabra giant tortoises on land, as well as seabird populations
- Monitoring and protection of sensitive marine habitats, coral gardens, reefs and seagrass beds
- Protection, photo-video identification and documentation of Manta Rays in co-operation with Manta Ray Trust
- Palm forest rehabilitation and protection of plants and native species
- Catch & Release ecotourism in collaboration with Alphonse Fishing Company
- Plastic disposal and beach clean-ups
You are invited to support this project on site and participate directly.
