Godmother Julie Andrews, better known as Mary Poppins, gave the Crystal Serenity her beautiful name in 2003. Since then, the flagship of Crystal Cruises has won the title of "World's Best Large Cruise Ship" from the renowned Condé Nast Traveller magazine in almost uninterrupted succession. A title that is both an honour and a claim. In May 2011, the shipping company invested around 25 million dollars in the Serenity as part of a makeover. This has brought her back up to the latest and highest standards in terms of luxury and lifestyle. And the next major refit of this dream ship will follow in October 2018.
"Our guests can look forward to dazzling rooms that provide a breathtaking backdrop for a dream holiday," says Matias Moldenhauer, Managing Director of Vista Travel, describing the new features on board. Interior designer Keith Rushbrook also enthuses about the ambitious project for the American luxury cruise line: "We want modern, classic elegance. We want a Fifth Avenue feel and an ambience that reflects the lifestyle of New York's crème de la crème." To achieve this goal, more than 400 experts from all over the world worked around the clock for 14 days at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg to modernise the 531 deluxe cabins and penthouses. The shopping arcade, some lounges and the pool deck also appear in contemporary splendour. Fine materials such as silk, velvet and leather as well as a sophisticated new lighting system ensure the highest feel-good factor. The shops have undergone a similarly breathtaking transformation, such as the "Apropos Boutique", which has been transformed into an impressive flagship store space for Christian Dior cosmetics in fine zebrawood and rosewood.
By the pool, there are round pool beds, rattan sofa groups and lounge furniture in shimmering lime green, azure and mango. With these permanent upgrades, the Crystal Serenity will continue to be what it has always been in the past, arguably the "world's best large cruise ship".
