Barcelona revels in contrasts: many rave about the elegance of the beautiful squares and boulevards, others seek out the medieval romance of the Barrio Gótico. Some love the art treasures in the Picasso Museum or the Joan Miró Foundation, but for most, Barcelona is the capital of Catalan Art Nouveau, which unfolds in all its splendour in the magnificent Palau de la Música. The playful and opulent work of architect Antonio Gaudí can be seen at every turn: with exuberant imagination, he designed numerous residential buildings, idiosyncratic parks and the famous unfinished Sagrada Familia church.

Welcome to the ancient world! Roman history comes to life in the Catalan harbour city of Tarragona. It all began in 218 BC, when the Romans conquered the city, gave it the name Tarraco and began building monuments that are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Walking along the old city walls and visiting the amphitheatre, the triumphal arch and the forum will take you back thousands of years into the past. The Cathedral de Santa Maria is a little younger, but just as worth seeing: its construction lasted from 1171 to 1331, which is why it combines Romanesque and Gothic style elements.

Already an important harbour city in Carthaginian and Roman times, Cartagena looks back on an eventful history. A geographical curiosity is the more than 20 km long headland "La Manga", which separates the extensive sandy beaches of the saltwater lagoon "Mar Menor" from those of the Mediterranean Sea. The Fuensanta monastery in the centre of the island is famous for its Marian apparition around 200 years ago and towers high above the city of Murcia. It offers a marvellous view of the lively university city. Murcia's mighty cathedral was built in 1394 on the site of a former Moorish mosque.
