During your two days in San Pedro de Atacama, there are several highlights on the programme. You will take a scenic drive through the breathtaking desert landscape to the village of Toconao, 38 kilometres away, with its typical adobe architecture on the edge of the Salar de Atacama salt flat, the third largest salt lake in the world. The small oasis town of San Pedro is the perfect base for exciting off-road tours into the Atacama Desert with its geological features: Salt Lake, Moon Valley and the El Tatio Geysers, which lie at an altitude of over 4,000 metres. This is the third largest geyser field in the world after the one in Yellowstone National Park and Dolina Geiserow in Russia. Ainsworth Bay - Tucker Islands: At dawn, the ship sails through Almirantazgo Sound to Ainsworth Bay with the Marinelli Glacier in the background. Here you can see how quickly life returns after the eternal ice cover has disappeared. You go on a hike to discover a beaver dam and marvel at the sub-Antarctic, Magellanic primeval forest all around. A colony of elephant seals can be observed on the beach. Back on the ship after lunch, you will reach the Tucker Islands, where you can observe colonies of Magellanic penguins (only found in the southern hemisphere) and cormorants from inflatable boats. If you are travelling in September or April, you will visit Brooke Bay, where a hike through the glacier of the same name is planned on land.
Pia Glacier - Avenue of Glaciers: The ship crosses the main arm of the Beagle Channel and sails into Pía Bay, where you disembark at the glacier of the same name. Here the excursion begins to a vantage point from which you can get an excellent view of the mountain range where the glacier originates and descends into the sea.
The cruise ship then continues through the north-west arm of the famous Beagle Channel. Today you will have the opportunity to see the majestic avenue of glaciers up close. A wonderful sight.
Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay: You travel through the Murray Channel and then go ashore in Wulaia Bay. This historic site was the location of one of the largest settlements of the Yamana Indians, who travelled the coasts in canoes. Charles Darwin disembarked here on his world voyage aboard the MS Beagle in 1833. Due to the beauty of its vegetation and geography, an impressive natural spectacle unfolds before our eyes. You hike through the Magellanic jungle with its lenga, coihue and canelo trees as well as numerous ferns and other species to a viewpoint.
In the afternoon, continue south through Nassau Bay to the Cabo de Hornos National Park, where you will go ashore if the weather conditions allow. The mystical Cape Horn, discovered in 1616, is a 425 metre high, almost vertical rock. For a long time, the cape was an important sea route for sailing ships from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Cape Horn is known as the end of the world and was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in June 2005.

The visit to Estancia Cristina begins with a boat trip on the north arm of Lake Argentino and a unique magical landscape in which the icebergs and mountains play the leading role. The boat is the only way to get to the fjord and the estancia. Activities such as horse riding and hiking are possible on site, please specify when booking.
Estancia Cristina is located at the far end of the Cristina Canal on the north-west coast of Lake Argentino in a remote corner of Los Glaciares National Park. The estancia was founded in 1914 by Joseph Percival Masters and his wife Jessie and still retains its essence today. It has kept alive the history of this pioneering family who, through enormous effort and perseverance, transformed this inhospitable and lonely place into a little piece of paradise.
You start at the harbour of Punta Bandera (Flag Point) at 8:30 am and take the boat on the northern arm of Lago Argentino to the last permitted navigation point on the Upsala Canal, from where you have a breathtaking view of the Upsala Glacier.
After disembarking at Estancia Cristina, each small group on the excursion is given a 4×4 FWD vehicle with a specialised guide. The journey takes you 9.5 kilometres uphill along the Feruglio corduroy to where the vehicle is parked. There you will take a 20-minute walk along the glacial erosion area to the Upsala Glacier viewpoint, from where you will have an impressive view of Lake Guillermo, the imposing eastern front of the Upsala Glacier and the southern Patagonian continental ice field. The FWD vehicles will take you to the estancia, where lunch awaits you. Afterwards, you will visit the estancia's Costumbrista Museum, a former shed where you will learn about the history of the pioneers of the Masters Family and their impressive experiences in this remote corner of the world around 100 years ago. There will also be a guided walk along the river Caterina, the well, the chapel and the colonial main house of the estancia.

For example, you can take a boat trip on Lago Argentino, the largest lake in Argentina. It is surrounded by several glaciers, such as the well-known Perito Moreno and the huge Upsala Glacier. You travel by boat along the edge of the abyss - a unique experience, as you can see the enormous dimensions of the ice masses from this position. Two more huge glaciers are waiting to be marvelled at today. Here you will see the largest of all South American glaciers again: the Upsala. The huge valley glacier is one of the fastest retreating in the region - how nice that you will still get to see the huge ice masses on this trip. You will visit Escuadra Bay and Muralla de Condoreras (Condor Nesting Wall). Seco, Heim and Spegazzini Glacier. You get off at the "Puesto Las Vacas" station. The following excursions take place with a local German-speaking guide in a private car.
The half-day excursion in a private car takes you to the surroundings of Hanga Roa and is perfect for a day when you can take it a little easier. First, head north of the town to Ahu Tahai. Here there are three restored ahus with rebuilt moais that look out over the island with their backs to the sea. On one of them stands Ko Te Riku, the only "seeing" statue on the whole island. Her eyes are made of white coral and black obsidian.
After visiting the Ahus, you will visit the "Father Sebastian Englert" museum in Hanga Roa with its interesting collections of archaeological finds and explanations on the anthropology of the island. You will also visit the Catholic church, where you can see interesting wooden statues that combine the symbolism of the old and new religions. On the drive through the town of Hanga Roa, you will have time to browse for souvenirs at the art markets.

Your private excursions: To begin with, you will visit the dwelling caves and the Moai platforms in Akahanga on the south coast of the island. The platforms have not been restored and the moai are still lying on the ground as they fell when the cult sites were destroyed.
The tour continues to Ahu Tongariki, the largest and perhaps most beautiful of the Ahus: 15 re-erected moai are enthroned on it and look out over their island, with the ocean behind them. You then continue to Rano Raraku, an extinct volcano made of tuff rock. It is perhaps the most interesting sight on the island, as the quarry where the moais were carved out of the rock is located here. The gigantic figures are scattered all over the slopes of the volcano. Further up you will find even more moais in various stages of completion, some still attached to the rock as if they had been abandoned from one day to the next.
From there, head north to the Ahu Te Pito Kura. Te Pito o Te Henua, also known as "the navel of the world", is located here. Legend has it that King Hotu Matua himself brought it with him when he first colonised Easter Island. The last stop on this eventful day is Anakena beach.
In the afternoon, take a trip to Ahu Akivi. Its seven rebuilt moai are aligned with the equinox, which indicates the Rapa Nui's advanced knowledge of astronomy. You will then visit the Puna Pau quarry, where the red stone headdresses worn by many moai were made. After the visit, return to the hotel.

After breakfast, you will set off on your next private half-day excursion with your guide and get to know Orongo. Their stone houses are located directly on the circular crater of the Rano Kau volcano and served as a ceremonial site for the birdman cult. This cult only developed after the demise of the Moai culture and consists of fertility rites and the birdman competition. When you reach the crater rim of Rano Kau, you have a spectacular view over the large crater lake, the sea and the town of Hanga Roa on the other side.
From another vantage point, you can recognise the three motus. These islets were the destination of the chosen young men during the birdman competition held from Orongo. One from each tribe set off swimming and climbing to the motus to steal the first swallow egg of the year. The winning clan became king of Rapa Nui for a year.

The still young MS Ventus Australis (built in 2017) is a modern cruise ship designed for navigating the Patagonian channels.
Ventus Australis is the youngest ship in the Australis fleet. Its older sister ship is Stella Australis, built in 2010.
On board, the design in each of the cabins is sporty, sober and yet elegant; all cabins are outside cabins. The nature experiences and the partly completely undeveloped regions are the focus of the journey.
The communal areas such as the lounges and the open deck are spacious and offer spectacular views.

Cabin
The cabins on board the MS Ventus Australis are all outside cabins, which means that each one has a window from which you can look directly out to sea.
The cabins are equipped with comfortable single or double beds and seating.
The size of the cabins varies between 16.5 and 20.5 square metres. The ship has 100 cabins spread over 5 decks. All cabins are decorated in maritime colours and have a large window and a private bathroom with shower and WC.
The superior outside cabin is particularly luxurious with a floor-to-ceiling panoramic window from which you can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery even more.

Treat yourself to Patagonian specialities in the restaurant. A buffet awaits you for breakfast and lunch. In the evening you will be served a 4-course menu, where you can choose between 2 options.

In the evenings, lectures are given on the day's itinerary and the next day's programme, as well as on culture and nature.

There are no vaccination requirements for Chile. Although Argentina is a yellow fever-endemic country, vaccination is only recommended for forested areas below 2,300 metres above sea level on the border with Brazil and Paraguay in the north and north-east of the country. No vaccination is required for travelling to Buenos Aires and Patagonia. For both countries, however, the Federal Foreign Office recommends checking and completing the standard vaccinations according to the current vaccination calendar of the Robert Koch Institute when travelling.

Due to its enormous length and extreme differences in altitude, Chile has several very different climate zones. The Chilean part of Patagonia, for example, has a cool, humid climate with an average temperature of four to twelve degrees. In the south, the climate is temperate oceanic, with temperatures not rising above 16 degrees even in summer. Along the coast, it is also comparatively cool thanks to the Humboldt Current from the Antarctic. It is warmer on Easter Island. The climate here is subtropical and temperatures climb up to 28 degrees in February. It is cooler in the centre of Chile with its Mediterranean climate and average temperatures of around 18 degrees. Due to the different weather conditions, Chile can be easily travelled throughout the year

"Everyone should see the striking granite mountains of the Torres del Paine National Park and the turquoise-coloured or deep blue lakes with calving glaciers in southern Patagonia at least once in their life, or even better, have "hiked" them once in the magnificent tranquillity of nature. Just as the endless starry sky under the Southern Cross and the energy of the Atacama Desert are truly fascinating. From my travels to this narrow country in South America, I know how much the friendly people respect nature and are aware of their responsibility to protect the landscapes through sustainable practices and to establish a deep connection with them. A fascinating country in the Andes, progressive, European-looking and in any case unique and incomparable to anything else. My tip: visit the unspoilt island of goblins and myths: Chiloe, make a detour to the legendary mystical Easter Island Rapa Nui and go ashore at the legendary Cape Horn. Patagonia will change you and if you eat the delicious Calafate berries, as they say here, you will return a happy person. Off to Patagonia."
