Vientiane, the Laotian capital, is surprising: it is not a metropolis in the classic sense, but a gently breathing city on the Mekong, where French heritage, Buddhist spirituality and tropical serenity meet. This is exactly where the Settha Palace Hotel is located - in the centre of the diplomatic quarter, just a few steps away from Wat Sisaket, the Presidential Palace and the promenade.
Despite its central location, there is little hustle and bustle in the hotel. As you enter the grounds, you switch from honking tuk-tuks to birds singing in the garden. Whether it's a walk along the riverbank at sunset or a café au lait in the nearby Rue Francaise - here, all distances are short but full of impressions.
The international airport is only about 15 minutes away - ideal for arriving in comfort and switching off in style. Vientiane is perhaps the quietest capital city in Southeast Asia - and the Settha Palace is its most elegant hideaway.

German nationals require a visa to enter Laos.
This visa can be applied for in various ways:
- In advance at the Laotian Embassy in Berlin.
- Online as an e-visa (eVisa): This is a convenient option that has recently become available and is usually processed within a few working days. The cost of an e-visa is currently around 50 US dollars.
- As a visa on arrival (Visa on Arrival): Available at international airports (e.g. Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse International Airport) and some international land borders. The costs for this are approx. 30 US dollars for German citizens.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of entry and have at least two free pages for the visa entry.
A tourist visa (both e-visa and visa on arrival) generally authorises a stay of 30 days, with the possibility of an extension to 60 days.
No compulsory vaccinations are required for direct entry from Germany to Laos, unless you are travelling from a yellow fever area or have had a longer transit there. In this case, you must provide proof of a yellow fever vaccination.
The Federal Foreign Office strongly recommends checking the standard vaccinations according to the current vaccination calendar of the Robert Koch Institute for children and adults (www.rki.de) and updating them if necessary.
Vaccinations against hepatitis A in particular are recommended as travel vaccinations. For longer stays, particular exposure or travelling to rural areas, you should also consider vaccinations against hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies and Japanese encephalitis.
Individual travel medical advice from a doctor or travel medicine specialist is strongly recommended to discuss the specific health risks of your trip to Laos and to optimise your vaccination protection.
Laos has a tropical monsoon climate, which is also characterised by dry and rainy seasons:
The dry season from November to May is the most popular time to visit. During this period, it tends to be cool and pleasant from November to February/March, while the months of March to May can get very hot before the rainy season sets in.
The rainy season lasts from May/June to October, with more intense, but often only hourly showers that bathe the landscape in lush green.
