On this trip, Dr Thomas Kauffels takes you into the natural environment of the UNESCO-protected Galapagos Islands, the laboratory of evolution. Prof Dr Hubert Lücker, zoologist and biologist, was zoo director in Dortmund and Dresden and lecturer in zoology and biogeography at the TU Dresden. He has travelled extensively around the world as a tour guide and his many years of experience have given him a sound knowledge of biology. Prof Dr Lücker has a wealth of experience in South America, particularly in Ecuador and on the Galápagos Islands, where he also regularly gives lectures on evolution and ecofaunistics. As a zoo consultant, he is involved in many projects and is a thought leader and scientific advisor for the series "Zoo Adventure", which is broadcast on ARD and ZDF.

You take off from Germany, Austria and Switzerland with KLM and land in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, in the late afternoon. You will be met and warmly welcomed by the local German-speaking tour guide, who will accompany you on the transfer to the Hotel Casona de la Ronda. After checking into your room, you will get to know the other participants, be introduced to the programme for the next few days and enjoy a presentation on the country over Ecuadorian finger food.

Today you will experience Quito, the highest capital city in the world at 2,850 metres above sea level. The city lies directly at the foot of the inactive and non-glaciated volcano Rucu Pichincha (4,690 m), which rises majestically on the western side of Quito. The level of sightseeing is also high. The cultural heritage of Ecuador's capital is so important that Quito was the first city in the world to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1978.
Look forward to the most important and best-preserved colonial centre in Latin America. Quito has a large colonial historic centre with numerous important buildings and monuments, especially monasteries and churches in the colonial baroque style, such as the Jesuit church La Compañía and the church of San Francisco of the Franciscan convent.
In addition to the gold-dipped churches and monasteries with massive hand-carved baroque doors, you'll find entire blocks of Spanish-style villas with enchanting geranium-filled balconies and hidden courtyards - this city really is an amazing place.
The new Quito is also interesting: since 2005, a cable car, the TelefériQo, has been running up a flank of the Pichincha to almost 4,000 metres in the west of the city. From there, you have an excellent view of the unique city and mountain panorama.
The equator line (after which the country is named) is celebrated by an ethnographic museum, information centres, craft shops and restaurants. We hope you enjoy posing for snapshots with one foot in the southern hemisphere and the other in the north!
In the evening, a welcome dinner in a select restaurant awaits you as the crowning highlight.
After breakfast, we set off in the direction of the Pacific archipelago, which inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
Depending on when you are travelling, you can either take the Routes D + A (November) or A + B (April, May). Here we describe the first itinerary D + A in detail. You will find a brief description of itinerary A + B at the end of the text.
Welcome aboard the Coral II, your specially chartered yacht for a maximum of just 20 guests. Then it's off on an adventurous cruise through the Galapagos Islands, a UNESCO natural heritage site.

The first destination of your cruise is the island of San Cristobal and the first stop is the Interpretation Centre. Here in the information centre you will learn everything you need to know about the island and its people. It offers you the perfect overview of the formation of the Galapagos Islands, their importance in the world as well as threats and conservation efforts. On the subsequent hike to Frigatebird Hill (Cerro Tijeretas), you can observe both species of frigatebirds and, as a bonus, marvel at a wonderful view of the bay. Then it's back on board.

When you step ashore on the landing boats at Cerro Brujo today, you'll first be mesmerised by the immensity of the breathtaking cliffs of Sorcerer's Hill. You can easily share the beach with sea lions, snorkel from the shore or take a walk to a hidden lagoon where you can spot black-necked stilts, rufous turnstones, plovers and white-cheeked pintails.
Next stop is Punta Pit, where you will be greeted by sea lions as you land on the beach and prepare to climb to a high point on the steep, eroded tuff cone. This is the only place on the islands where you have the opportunity to see all three gannet species in the same place. The red-footed boobies perch on the Cordia lutea and on small trees, the Nazca boobies on the ground near the cliff edge, while the blue-footed boobies are a little further inland. Frigate birds will be everywhere, chattering away. Another - literal - highlight: the panorama from up here is breathtaking.
One of the highlights of the trip: Punta Suarez - a paradise for nature lovers - seems to have it all. You will be greeted by a large number of marine iguanas and sea lions as soon as you land. Your walk starts here with close encounters with gannets, endemic lizards, seagulls and even a dramatic blowhole. As the oldest surviving island in the archipelago, your only opportunity is to 'have a chat' with the endemic waved albatross during the breeding season between April and December. With a bit of luck, you may be able to observe its complex courtship display.
Gardner Bay offers one of the most beautiful beaches in the Galapagos. The long, white sandy beach, lapped by turquoise-coloured water, is home to a colony of Galapagos sea lions that are indifferent to the humans that walk among them.
The Hood's mockingbirds that live on this island will be happy to inspect you and satisfy their innate curiosity. Darwin finches may also join you as visitors, and perhaps the more reclusive warbler finches. You can also snorkel from the beach in the rocky bottom of the bay.
On arrival at Porto Cormoran, geology buffs may notice that the local olivine, a volcanic crystal, has a subtle green colour on the dark beach. Your walk takes you past island-endemic Scalesia plants to a large, shallow lagoon that is often inhabited by a group of pink flamingos. You continue through a forest of Palo Santo trees to reach a powder-white beach, a nesting area for green turtles. As you swim or snorkel in the shallow waters, you may spot diamond stingrays and whitetip reef sharks.
Devil's Crown, an eroded volcanic cone, is also one of the most popular snorkelling spots on the islands. You will swim with large schools of yellowtail surgeonfish, salemas and creole fish and, with a bit of luck, see turtles, spotted eagle rays, parrotfish and even hammerhead sharks! The jagged crown of the Devil's Crown is also a resting place for gannets, noddy terns, tropicbirds and frigate birds.
The post office is actually also about a post box. A short walk from the beach takes you to the famous post office box. It was supposedly founded in 1793 by Captain James Colnett and is still the oldest functioning post office in the Pacific. The system consisted of whalers and fur traders leaving addressed letters in the barrel for colleagues travelling home to take. In the spirit of upholding this tradition, visitors today often pick up letters and deliver them to their home countries. Perhaps you could also play postman ...
In the central highlands of Santa Cruz Island, you have the best opportunity to get up close and personal with wild Galapagos giant tortoises. A short walk among these huge 6kg reptiles also offers the opportunity to observe more Highland species, especially some species of the famous finches.
A visit to the collapsed twin holes (Gemelos), the Pit Craters, takes you into a breathtaking forest of the endemic tree species Scalesia. In addition to the dramatic landscape, this area is also known for its variety of passerine birds.
At the Charles Darwin Research Station, you can follow in the footsteps of the great evolutionary scientist. The breeding and resettlement centre displays exhibits on the geography, geology and climate of the islands and the development of their unique species. Giant tortoises are also bred here, so you can get up close to newly hatched babies, juveniles and adult specimens. The site, with its large stands of native vegetation, is also one of the best places to see some of the famous Darwin's finches.
On your arrival at Dragon Hill, you will encounter the prehistoric marine iguanas on a small lava jetty. A walk takes you along prickly pear cacti to the long, crescent-shaped beach; Dragon Hill looms in the distance. Continue to a shallow lake where flamingos are common, as well as waders, turnstones and sandpipers. Further inland you explore a dry, forested habitat where land iguanas nest and burrow.
Pinnacle Rock on a small bay is considered the most iconic landscape in the entire archipelago. The scenery resembles a lunar landscape. Your subsequent snorkelling could bring you close to Galapagos penguins, white-tip reef sharks and playful sea lions.
The dramatic island of Rabida, with its striking red sand beach, lies at the heart of the archipelago and is home to sea lions, mockingbirds, finches, endemic Galapagos pigeons and vermilion flycatchers. A walk takes you through a forest of palo santo and cacti to a beautiful bay. Snorkelling is excellent here, often with large shoals of black-striped salemas, sea lions and the ubiquitous turtles.
Buccaneer Cove has a fantastic wind and wave eroded coastline, home to seabirds, fur seals and playful sea lions. In the past, the eponymous buccaneers used to come to this tranquil cove to stock up on food and fresh water.
Espumilla Beach is a white sandy beach in James Bay that is very popular with visitors. There are mangroves and a small Palo Santo forest that leads to saltwater lagoons where wading birds such as flamingos live. There is a nesting site for sea turtles in the upper dunes. Our tip: A good place for snorkelling and ray spotting.
Here at Black Turtle Cove you will find four species of mangroves in the extensive tidal lagoon system that stretches almost a mile inland. During your journey through the labyrinth by landing boat, you will discover many turtles, herons of various species, sharks and rays. It's an experience out of time.
Then local flight back to the mainland to Guayaquil. From here, your KLM long-haul flight to Amsterdam departs in the evening.
Arrival in Amsterdam around midday and onward flight to your home airport, where you land in the evening. In your luggage you will have a treasure trove of memories of the unique and revolutionary archipelago in the Pacific: the Galapagos Islands.

Ecuador:
German citizens require a passport to enter the country, which must be valid for 6 months after entry and must not be damaged. A temporary passport is not accepted. German citizens do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days in total.
For visits to the Galapagos Islands, proof of a return flight ticket and hotel reservation for the planned duration of the stay has also been required since February 2018.
Peru:
German citizens require a passport that must be valid for six months from the date of entry. Tourists can stay in Peru for 90 days every six months without a visa.
There are no vaccination requirements for direct entry from Germany. The Federal Foreign Office recommends checking the standard vaccinations according to the current vaccination calendar of the Robert Koch Institute for children and adults (see: www.rki.de) when travelling and completing them if necessary.
Ecuador: No proof of a yellow fever vaccination is required for direct entry from Germany, but a vaccination is strongly recommended for all travellers aged 12 months and over when travelling to the designated yellow fever infection areas in Ecuador. There is no risk of transmission in Quito, Guayaquil and the Galapagos Islands. If you are travelling from Ecuador, vaccination may be required if you are travelling on to a third country.
Peru: According to the Peruvian immigration authorities, proof of a yellow fever vaccination is currently not required when travelling from a yellow fever area or when entering the country directly from Germany. However, when travelling to the designated yellow fever endemic areas of Peru, especially for the Peruvian Amazon region and the areas east of the Andes below 2,300 metres, timely vaccination is strongly recommended for all travellers over the age of nine months. If you are travelling from Peru to a third country, the vaccination may be required.
On the mainland in Ecuador and Peru, the coastal area and eastern lowlands have a hot and humid tropical climate, while the Andean highlands have a temperate climate with strong temperature fluctuations. On the Pacific coast, the rainy season lasts from January to April and is not recommended due to the high temperatures and humidity.
The Galapagos Islands are a good holiday destination all year round. The best time to visit for fans of a tropical climate is between December and May. Temperatures during this time are around 30 degrees, the sun shines for up to eight hours a day and there can be showers. The cooler season is from June to November. There is hardly any rain during these months and temperatures only drop a little.
Peru's climate can vary greatly depending on the region. The Peruvian dry season is between May and November, the best time to travel is between April and October. However, depending on the altitude, it can also get a little chilly during these months. December to March is the Peruvian summer, but it is also the rainy season.
Ecuador:
Legal tender in Ecuador is the US dollar, US cent coins and national centavo coins. As counterfeit notes are increasingly in circulation, shops and banks generally do not accept 50 and 100 US dollar notes. Travellers should bear this in mind when bringing US dollars in cash.
Peru:
The official Peruvian currency is the Nuevo Sol. In most cities or larger towns in Peru, you will find ATMs where you can easily withdraw money with your credit card. EC cards are also accepted as long as they bear the Maestro or Cirrus symbol.
