With three main seasons - Northern Lights in winter, solar winter and polar summer - Svalbard offers you different opportunities for unforgettable adventures. If you want to experience the magical Northern Lights, we recommend travelling during the polar night from October to March. The sunny winter from March onwards offers longer days and perfect conditions for hiking as well as breathtaking sunsets. In the polar summer, you can expect fantastic hiking opportunities and the chance to discover the fascinating Arctic wildlife, including whales, walruses, seals and majestic polar bears.
The Temperatures are cool all year round, with the summer months being somewhat milder than the winter months. In winter, the average temperature is between -14°C and -6°C, while in summer it is between 3°C and 7°C. The region experiences extreme darkness during the polar night in winter, followed by the midnight sun in summer, during which the sun does not set for several months. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and it is not uncommon to experience snowfall even in summer. It is therefore advisable to be prepared for cold weather, regardless of the season, and to bring the right equipment. On the island excursion, only casual and sporty winter leisurewear is worn. The "big" wardrobe is not required.
We generally recommend:
Professional winter equipment: jacket, hat, gloves, trousers - which also serve as rain/snow/cold protection
Comfortable winter hiking boots
Ski goggles and equipment for outdoor activities of all kinds in the Arctic at low temperatures
