During our European winter, it is summer in South Africa. South African spring begins in September, and from around November to mid-March it is high summer. During the summer months, consistently warm temperatures during the day ensure optimal conditions on the coasts and in the Cape region. At night, temperatures can drop to almost freezing point. The climate along the Garden Route is also pleasant in autumn in the months of April and May. From around June to September, it is winter in South Africa. This time is considered ideal for safaris in South Africa's national parks, with average temperatures of around 18 degrees Celsius in Cape Town. The months of July to November are known for the particularly high chances of spotting whales at Plettenberg Bay.
German citizens do not require a visa for tourist trips to South Africa for up to 90 days. A visit permit is issued upon entry. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after departure and contain at least two free pages for stamps.
Important change for minors:
Since 8 November 2019, minors travelling with at least one parent no longer need to present birth certificates or declarations of consent. However, minors travelling alone still require additional documents such as a confirmation from the inviting person in South Africa. It is recommended to contact the South African Department of Home Affairs or the South African Embassy directly for the most up-to-date information.
No proof of vaccination is required for direct entry from Germany. However, the Federal Foreign Office recommends checking the standard vaccinations according to the current vaccination calendar of the Robert Koch Institute and completing them if necessary.
Depending on the itinerary, it may be necessary to take malaria prophylaxis medication.
