German nationals require a visa to enter Vietnam if their stay is longer than 45 days.
German nationals can enter the country without a visa for stays of up to 45 days. This regulation is currently valid until 14 March 2028. Upon entry, the presentation of a return or onward travel ticket may be required.
A visa is required for stays of more than 45 days or for multiple entries. This can be applied for in various ways:
E-visa: This is the most commonly used method. An electronic visa can be applied for online via the official website of the Vietnamese immigration authorities and is valid for stays of up to 90 days (including multiple entries). The processing time is usually around three working days.
Visa at the Vietnamese mission abroad: The visa can also be applied for in advance at the Vietnamese embassy in Berlin or a consulate general.
Visa on Arrival: This is possible at the international airports in Vietnam but usually requires an „Approval Letter“ in advance from a Vietnamese travel agency and involves fees. It is advisable to only choose this option if no other possibility exists.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry (or the validity of the visa) and have at least two blank pages. Your hotel is usually responsible for registering you with the local police.
No compulsory vaccinations are required for direct entry into Vietnam from Germany, unless you are travelling from a yellow fever area or have been in transit there for a longer period of time.
The Federal Foreign Office strongly recommends checking the standard vaccinations according to the current vaccination calendar of the Robert Koch Institute for children and adults (www.rki.de) and updating them if necessary.
Vaccinations against hepatitis A in particular are recommended as travel vaccinations. For longer stays or special exposure, additional vaccinations against dengue fever, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies and Japanese encephalitis should be considered. Individual travel medical advice is recommended in advance.
Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An): The climate is tropical. The dry season from February to August offers plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures, ideal for beach holidays. The rainy season is from September to January, with the heaviest rainfall and typhoons often occurring between September and November.
